Expertise in Complex Pet Surgery

At Companion Animal Hospital of River North, we have an outstanding team who is not only able to perform most routine surgeries, but has the experience and expertise in complex pet surgery. Dr. Schnitker is our veterinary surgeon who completed a Surgical Internship at Veterinary Surgical Associates (now Sage Centers) in San Francisco, California. She has extensive experience in both orthopedic procedures as well as more complex soft tissue surgeries.

Surgeries Performed by Our Veterinary Surgeon

Dr. Schnitker performs a wide range of procedures that most general practice veterinarians cannot. These include cruciate ligament repairs as well as specialized soft tissue surgeries.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common orthopedic injury in dogs and is prevalent throughout all breeds; however, large and giant breeds seem to be more predisposed to the condition. Dr. Schnitker is able to perform three CCL repair surgeries, depending on the best option for your pet. These include:

  • Fabellotibial suture (FT suture) – Also know as extracapsular suture stabilization, an FT suture procedure uses a suture material secured into the joint that mimics the function of the CCL. This procedure is best used for smaller breeds and older patients.
  • Tightrope (TR) – The tightrope technique is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a special suture implant that is threaded through holes drilled through the thigh and shin bones for accurate placement.
  • Tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) – This procedure involves “cutting” the shin (tibia) bone in such a way that the front is advanced forward until it is 90 degrees to the tibial plateau. A bone plate and screws are inserted to stabilize the joint.

In addition to the usual surgeries performed in a general practice setting, Dr. Schnitker can also perform a range of more complex soft tissue surgeries including:

  • Gallbladder surgery
  • Liver surgery
  • Lung surgeries
  • Total ear canal ablation (TECA)
  • Salivary gland removal
  • Colon removal
