SPAY AND NEUTER SURGERY IN RIVER NORTH, CHICAGO
Helping your pet start their life on a healthy note is critical. The care they receive in the first year of their life includes exams, vaccinations and other preventative treatments to protect them from disease. Likewise, we recommend spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs at a certain age to prevent or reduce problems they might encounter later. At Companion Animal Hospital, we’re passionate about promoting pet health and reducing overpopulation numbers in River North and surrounding neighborhoods.
HOW DOES SPAYING/NEUTERING BENEFIT MY PET?
Spaying and neutering can improve the odds of a pet living a healthier and longer life. Additionally, reducing the stray population can go a long way towards helping homeless animals find lasting homes.
Other benefits include:
- No pregnancies
- No heat cycle and spotting
- No running off and roaming around to breed
- Less potential to develop mammary and uterine cancers
- Likelihood of developing pyometra (infected uterus) eliminated
- No caterwauling (cats)
- Less likely to be aggressive
- A reduction in inappropriate mounting behaviors
- Less likely to run off and roam around to breed
- Reduced likelihood of developing prostatic problems and testicular cancer
WHEN SHOULD MY PET BE SPAYED/NEUTERED?
Generally, pets can be spayed and neutered between 6-7 months old. However, this depends on the pet’s health, size and breed. Larger dogs often need to wait until they’re between 9 months and a year old, since they spend more time growing and developing.
Since our pet’s health is our primary concern, we want to help you choose the time that works best for them. We also encourage you to ask questions to fully understand the procedure your pet needs and how it will benefit them in the future.
