Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

There are more healing modalities available for pets than ever before, and platelet rich plasma therapy is one of several that we offer. At Companion Animal Hospital River North, it’s our mission to deliver the most advanced and effective healing solutions to the pet community. Because we are a Fear Free Certified practice, we look for ways to make treatment as painless and non-invasive as possible. With platelet rich plasma therapy, we can help treat injuries or chronic conditions affecting your pet’s bones, joints, and muscles.

HOW THIS THERAPY WORKS

The idea behind platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy for pets is simple: we take a sample of your pet’s blood and use the platelets and white blood cells it contains to heal damaged tissue. The body automatically directs platelets to damaged tissue, where they naturally clump together. With PRP, we process your pet’s blood sample to create a higher concentration of platelets and white blood cells and inject these directly into the area affected for increased healing.

PROCESSING THE BLOOD SAMPLE

Once we draw a blood sample from your pet, we need to separate the white blood cells, platelets, and serum from the red blood cells. We have an in-house processing unit for timely treatment. When we have the proper mixture of platelets, white blood cells, and serum, we can inject it into the area of injury. Some pets may need only one injection for their treatment, while others may need two or three. Our team will follow up with you to track your pet’s progress and recommend the next steps.

WHAT CAN BE TREATED WITH PRP?

PRP has a variety of treatment indications, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Ligament tears and sprains
  • Muscle injuries
  • Tendonitis
  • …and more
